Lush Hush Hush cinnamon and coconut farm is managed by a woman, Annabel Allen. As our orders grow, more women in the community will write the love letters. In rural Sri Lanka limited opportunities exist for women to make an income. This love letter initiative is a small step to making a change for local women.

the cinnamon story

plant, replant, grow

First cinnamon seeds were planted in rows. Some of them struggled to survive. The playful puppies chased the land monitors, not knowing they were disturbing the growing seeds. Cinnamon seedlings were a better option - they were already somewhat robust. We planted the seedlings in the fertile earth. Ever so slowly they grew into cinnamon bushes.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

At sunrise the bird song bursts forth, uplifting the cinnamon bushes. Annabel too sings of love to the cinnamon and all the plants and trees and wildlife on Lush Hush Hush farm. Giving the cinnamon bushes their own fallen leaves and twigs as natural compost is a gift of love.
HARVEST TO CINNAMON STICK

The harvest is the time when the cinnamon peelers and their family gather on the farm. At sunrise the peelers cut the ripe cinnamon branches. With special tools they sit to remove the outer bark and peel off layers of the inner bark, fitting them together to form the cinnamon stick (quill). After 2 weeks of drying, the quills are delectable.

Cinnamon brings much yummy joy. Simply add hot water to some flakes of cinnamon stick to make cinnamon tea. Or add to another hot drink, stew or curry. Grind into a powder to add to biscuits or cakes or both!
